AI and crowdsourcing to steer clear of seed oils

Overview

Seed Oil Scout is a community driven mapped resource for finding and avoiding seed oils in food products. Members can add reviews and check-ins to help others find healthy options. As the designer on this project, I led a complete redesign of the Flutter-based app for iOS and Android.

Two phone screens displaying a before and after of the app redesign. The background interface displays information about a restaurant and whether it uses seed oils.
A close-up of a phone screen displaying a list of actions to take including contacting the restaurant via email with a template or using Instagram to DM.

The app has quite a fair amount of premium users and contributors. The existing design had a lot of potential, but was significantly hindered by ever-changing features. It's hard to make brown work in an interface, but I struck a nice balance and made it feel less antique and more natural.

A collection of various interface elements that built the design system for the app. The design system follows a delightful and playful aesthetic.

A majority of the components, buttons, forms, icons were more or less rebuilt from the ground up. We focussed primarily on the details and map experience, plus all of the possible sheets and modals. I channeled Yelp and Google Maps' best parts to create a design that is both functional and delightful. Adding haptics to buttons and opening sheets added a moment of delight.

While important to keep OS-consistancy per platform, it just made sense to use a single interface across iOS and Android. It gave me a good opportunity to really remix Material Design with the Human Interface Guidelines.
